Columbarium Extension
Years ago (feels like another life) I was a bank trust officer in South Africa handling deceased estates and was struck by a phrase that appeared on an undertaker’s bill – “fee for scattering of cremains”! Never had I heard that term before, although instinctively knew what it meant. But really – “cremains”?
Meddling by the Interim
“When I say ‘sorry,’ I am in charge. When I ask for forgiveness, however, I am no longer in charge. I am in the hands of others, only you can forgive me; only God can forgive me.” Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Ireland on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church, when he asked sexual abuse victims for forgiveness.
Lenten Practices
As our interim rector, Chris Thompson, mentioned in his Ash Wednesday homily, Lent is a penitent season and one way we acknowledge this in our lives is by stopping, or adding, certain practices.
Message from Mary: Lent
Lent is here. As in previous years, I am hurriedly spinning through ideas for my personal Lenten sacrifice. For me, it all started when I came to St. John’s just before Lent 2004.
Reading Camp 2023: Follow the Drinking Gourd
We are excited to confirm that (God willing and the creek don’t rise) we will be able to host Reading Camp at St. John’s again this year, after a hiatus for Covid. We are hard at work with our preparations and are once again thrilled with the cooperation we are receiving from our community. The week selected begins July 17, 2023.
What’s Cookin’ at Outreach
Our next Outreach meeting will be Sunday, March 12, at noon in the downstairs library. We will make plans to cook and serve dinner for the residents at Samaritan Inn. This will be our first outside project since Covid-19 and we are very excited about it.
A Note of Thanks
Our Shrove Tuesday dinner was very well attended and there was a plentiful bounty of goodies devoured. I want to thank these dedicated volunteers that assisted in the dinner.
Evangelism Corner: March
The Lenten season is upon us already! What shall we give up? I am never successful with elimination of something during this season. I begin with good intentions, and then well, the most perfect piece of something I decided to eliminate appears!
Website Update
Coming later this spring will be a whole new stjohnswv.org! The updated site will include updated versions of all the content on our existing website with a refreshed design and layout.
Edmund Caskie Harrison Fund
If you’ve been around St. John’s very long, you may be familiar with the name, and perhaps the fund created in his memory.
Bishop Matthew’s Lenten Message
“You are invited to a Holy Lent, to take on those practices that place you in the presence of the Holy One who is always present with you. What do you need to practice that presence during these forty days of Lent?”
