New Kid On The Block!

The title is probably somewhat misleading, because this 83 year-old newbie at St John’s is far from being the “new kid on the block.”  Or feeling like it for that matter.

When I was a kid, the family moved to Florida from Massachusetts.  There I found myself as new kid on the block not even being included on “ red rover.”  Also in sixth grade shy, and believing I was the only kid with skinny arms and legs.  I the new kid on the block in many imaginings.

Nothing like that here at St. John’s.   It’s been a big move from a religious tradition of 40 years to evolving into an Episcopalian.  There has been a felt need to grow more in my faith and become a better human being.

A person seriously seeking a relationship with God comes to realize there is always more.   It doesn’t necessarily mean there is more about God; it does mean there is more of life to be discovered, more awareness, celebration, and thus personal growth.

And St. John’s has already become that discovery ground for me. I feel so blessed to be a new member here.

The blessing by Fr Eric in front of the entire congregation, the open arms and greetings. The coffee hours. The Adult Faith meetings every Sunday.  And a special group very close to my heart- SAGA.  I love the SAGA meetings and the mission statement to make a voice of quality in our community.

And the elegance of a centuries-old building that has had many God stories to tell.

There is much much more: the beautiful choir, the organ, the stained glass windows, the Rector in his own personality who celebrates own spiritual journey and role models humility as a Christian disciple. (This man actually gets down on his knees to finish dressing for the Eucharist!.)

All of this to say thank you very much to each and every one of you. If I haven’t yet met you, I will make it a point to do that soon. And, I promise to be using my gifts and talents to contribute to the mission of St. John’s.
